Hantise (Obsession) - Odilon Redon Art Print

Three things followed her home. Odilon Redon's Hantise (Obsession) art print catches them mid-drift, parked in the anthracite air around a woman who won't meet their gaze. He drew her on stone in 1893. Léon Monrocq's Paris press pulled fifty impressions on chine appliqué the next year. Redon titled the plate Hantise. Museums translate it two ways: Obsession and The Haunting.
She stands in strict profile, eyelids lowered, a tallow-pale column in an Empire-waist gown. Greasy lithographic crayon rakes down the skirt until its edge kicks out in two stiff fins. Ahead of her, a hollow-eyed mask dangles from a stalk. A ribbed larva hooks in overhead. At her back, a scowling head with no body keeps watch.
Parisians of the 1890s were tipping tables to reach their dead, and Allan Kardec's spiritist handbooks were still in print. Odilon Redon did his summoning in ink. He called his monochrome lithographs noirs and showed them at the Durand-Ruel gallery in 1894, the year this sheet was published. The poet Stéphane Mallarmé, a close friend, prized them. As Gothic wall art, this French Symbolism print keeps one rule: she never turns around.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical
Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal
Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)
Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws
Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
