A rifle stands upright between two kilted soldiers, thin as a tent pole, and the whole of Going On Leave hangs on that single vertical line. Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell drew these men in 1915 from inside the ranks of the Dandy Ninth, the 9th Royal Scots, serving as a private beside friends he would not trade for an officer’s commission.

The future Scottish Colourist works at speed. Black ink loops a glengarry and gives each jaw one curve. Pale lemon wash does the rest. Red flecks sit on the cap crowns and the tops of the hose, regimental signals that tell any Scot at twenty paces who these two belong to. The kilt pleats drop in four strokes of soot.

One man turns his shoulder to us, bound for the train; the other grins sideways at a joke we will never hear. Printed in 1916 inside Jack and Tommy and sold for the Red Cross, this wartime sheet holds the hours between barracks and home.
