Open Zenken Kojitsu at the right leaf and this geisha turns her face from you. Kikuchi Yōsai issued this woodblock-printed book in installments across three decades. Its final volume reached readers in 1868, the year Meiji began.
Kneel beside her. Her kimono hems pool in wide ink loops over a bone-white field. One sleeve rears above her crown with reed sprays sprouting along its lining, and a tuft of tassels flicks at the cuff.
Circle crests crowd a soot-dark band on the inner sleeve. A lone blossom knots at her collar. From it, cords drop in long parallel strokes toward her lap.
Her loose lacquer-dark hair and brows smudged high like thumbprints belong to the Kyoto palace of Murasaki's day. The tasseled cuff points to the shirabyōshi, singers in men's court dress who entertained twelfth-century nobles.
