For six September nights in 1977, an American garrison on the Rhine staged Frankenstein, and this playbill told the troops where to find the door.

A skull grins in left profile inside the faint outline of a living face. The cranium is sliced open and the brain sits packed in lampblack crosshatching, each fold cut by a pen that thinks it is an engraver’s burin. Three electrodes spear the head at D, E and B. A hexagonal bolt locks the neck at numeral 5. German cursive crowds the margins in a hurried laboratory hand, the language Victor heard in his Ingolstadt lecture halls.

Mary Shelley’s Gothic novel becomes an anatomical chart here, a phrenology plate crossed with a wiring diagram and pinned up for soldiers at Taukkunen Barracks. Galvanism hums along every arrow.

Boris Karloff’s flat-topped monster of 1931 never shows up. The Worms Theatre Center got a Modern Prometheus opened in the manner of Vesalius, annotated by a nervous surgeon and monogrammed 77. In Cold War West Germany, that reads as horror with a security clearance. Pin this U.S. Army community theater print where guests will ask who signed off on the experiment.

Origin Story

Jim Thorpe is the American artist and illustrator who helped draw Knoxville, Tennessee, onto the world map. One of the first staff artists hired for the 1982 World’s Fair, officially the Knoxville International Energy Exposition, he was shaping the event’s image long before the gates opened. His initial fair poster marshalled the flags of participating nations into a single bright procession, a promise of global arrival.

Thorpe’s conceptual drawings imagined the international pavilions, among them the Chinese pavilion, while his advertising heralded celebrity appearances such as Red Skelton’s. His cover for the 1982 Tennessee telephone book sat beside countless phones, and a promotional mailer carried his work to 1.5 million addresses. Forty years on, at the East Tennessee History Center, Thorpe shared the posters and sketches behind it all, a vivid record of graphic design, commercial illustration and civic ambition.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
