His scoop-neck singlet stays uncolored, his grin turned down and inward. The older supporter beside him carries all the amber: torso and shorts flooded with ochre wash, belted in a single black bar. A red-flecked cap rides his brow. A stubby pipe juts from lips drawn as three quick rules, its smoke hooking upward in one curl of line.

Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell worked this fast with brush and ink between the oils that made his name — Iona white sand, New Town interiors, the flattened color of the Scottish Colourists. Paris training at the Académie Julian sits inside that economy. So do the Royal Scots years, which taught him how men stand near each other without speaking but convey a world of camaraderie. Like theses two generations on one terrace, bare legs on Edinburgh stone. The amber holding what the ink refuses to say.
