About the Artwork

Classical Figures in Battle catches the second before the spear leaves the hand. Mauritius Lowe plants his winged warrior on bare ground, legs braced wide and oval shield swung forward. Pen strokes hook into scale armor across his ribs. Overhead a black shape in a spiked crown, brushed in soot-black ink, points a hooked finger at his head.

Between them rises a woman whose hips pour into serpent coils, one arm reaching for the shield and the other thrown skyward. Her mouth hangs open mid-cry. Georgian readers would have named the trio: Satan, Sin and Death from Milton’s Paradise Lost, at Hell’s gate in Book II.

This British painter and printmaker won the Royal Academy’s first gold medal for history painting in 1769, and Samuel Johnson counted him a friend. The grand manner is still in his hand. Taupe wash gathers around the figures on tawny buff paper, thick with the Gothic sublime of Fuseli’s London. As a fine art print, this ink wash drawing keeps her raised palm at the center of the wall.
Origin Story

Mauritius Lowe (1746–1793) was a British painter and engraver whose story begins at the founding of an institution. He was one of the first students at the Royal Academy of Arts, entering its rooms while the paint on its ambitions was still wet. There, his talent was crowned with a gold medal, an honour he shared with sculptor John Bacon and architect James Gandon, three young names glinting at the Academy’s dawn.

In 1771 that promise earned him a Traveling Studentship, a sponsorship to study art abroad for three years. Then the narrative swerves. His allowance was later forfeited for misconduct, a gold-lit beginning shadowed by a lapse the record leaves unexplained. Beyond the studio, Lowe was a friend of the writer and poet Samuel Johnson, a bond that threads his name into the literary life of Georgian Britain.
