Utagawa Kuniyoshi packs the last stretch of the Tokaido road with cats, and each one is a riddle in fur. This Japanese woodblock print is the third sheet of Cats Suggested as the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido, running Miya to Kyoto. Vermilion cartouches name each stop. Beside every tag, a cat acts out a pun on the town.
One dives headfirst into a straw-gold bamboo basket. A calico yanks a red-flecked cloth near Kameyama. Another naps by an abalone shell, the dish Edo period homes filled with rice and bonito for their cats. Under a slate plaid quilt, a white cat peeks out wrapped in red.
Each town name hides wordplay for an Edo crowd to laugh at. At Ishibe a patched cat yowls at the ceiling, and the Minakuchi cat sits tall beside it, eyes lifted. Near Chiryu a white cat squints with calm contempt. Japanese bobtails stand in for the post towns between Narumi and Otsu. At the stop marked Kyoto, a striped tabby trots into the capital with a gray mouse clamped in its jaws. And the blue seal of publisher Ibaya Senzaburo keeps a straight face on ivory washi.
