Blackthorn, Hawthorn emerges as a verdant symphony of British flora, showcasing the Arts and Crafts Movement's zenith in wallpaper design. This botanical masterpiece, attributed to John Dearle under William Morris's tutelage, interweaves hawthorn's delicate white blossoms with vibrant daisies, tulips, and sunflowers against a sumptuous emerald backdrop.

The pattern's vertical symmetry and intricate layering of turquoise accents and coral blooms depart from Morris's signature diagonals, revealing Dearle's burgeoning artistic voice. This wallpaper transcends mere decoration, embodying the movement's ethos of elevating domestic spaces through meticulous craftsmanship.

The design's lush complexity and harmonious color palette not only celebrate nature's beauty but also mark a pivotal moment in decorative arts, bridging Victorian opulence with the aesthetic sensibilities of the fin de siècle.

Learn more about William Morris

Origin Story

William Morris (1834–1896) was a visionary English designer, poet, and socialist activist, whose profound influence on the Arts and Crafts movement reshaped British decorative arts, interior design, and modern fantasy literature.

Rejecting industrial mass production, Morris championed handcrafted textiles, medieval-inspired patterns, and artisanal bookmaking, reviving traditional British textile arts, wallpaper design, and stained glass craftsmanship. He was intimately connected to the Pre-Raphaelites and co-founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. (later Morris & Co.), a firm that defined Victorian interior decoration. Producing intricate floral motifs, botanical wallpaper, and handwoven tapestries that remain iconic today.

A literary polymath, Morris translated Icelandic sagas, penned utopian socialist fiction like News from Nowhere, and was instrumental in early socialist movements, founding the Socialist League in 1884. His passion for historic preservation led to the creation of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, ensuring the survival of medieval architecture. In 1891, he established the Kelmscott Press, crafting exquisitely printed books that influenced modern typography and fine press publishing.

Morris’s organic textile prints, illuminated manuscripts, and socially conscious design ethos continue to inspire artists, designers, and scholars worldwide.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
