About the Artwork

Actor Nakamura Shikaku II as Lady Shizuka at Horikawa Palace opens on midnight indigo, poured by Natori Shunsen like ink settling in a well. Cut for the 1925 series Creative Prints: Collected Portraits by Shunsen, this art print catches the onnagata in the second before steel. Kyoto, 1185. Assassins hunting Minamoto no Yoshitsune breach the gates, so his beloved shirabyōshi straps samurai armor over her vermilion robe.

Watch her eyes. Rouge-rimmed and sliding sideways, they track a footstep beyond the frame. A cream hachimaki bites into center-parted hair, and court eyebrows float high as two smoky moons on chalk-white skin. Below, the kabuki costume catches fire as chrysanthemums smolder rust red across each sleeve.

Watanabe Shōzaburō’s carvers gave every strand of that lacquer-black wig its own nervous line. This Japanese woodblock print runs at shin-hanga voltage, a Taishō stage idol pressed into paper with the tension of a held cue. On your wall she keeps listening. At the margin, a gold-flecked lacquer shaft waits for her hand.

Origin Story

Natori Shunsen (1886–1960) was the Japanese woodblock printmaker widely hailed as the last master of kabuki yakusha-e, or actor prints. Born in Yamanashi Prefecture to a silk merchant’s family and raised in Tokyo, he trained in Nihonga painting under Kubota Beisen and Hirafuku Hyakusui. Illustrating for the Asahi Shimbun, including novels by Natsume Sōseki, sharpened his eye for the theatre’s shifting faces.

In 1916 publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō began translating his designs into shin-hanga, a partnership that culminated in the celebrated Collection of Shunsen’s Portraits (1925–1929). Here kabuki is held at its most taut: kumadori makeup flaring across a stilled face, a gaze caught between role and performer. Exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art, his prints carried the ukiyo-e lineage of Edo into the twentieth century with rare psychological candour.
