About the Artist

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a Dutch painter known for his versatility across various styles, including Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Pointillism. Born in Purworejo, Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia), Toorop moved to the Netherlands at a young age, where he pursued art education at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. He spent several years in Brussels, becoming part of the artist group Les XX, and worked in Realism, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism before developing his distinctive Symbolist style. Toorop's unique approach drew heavily on Javanese motifs, with dynamic lines and stylized figures. He also explored Art Nouveau, producing book illustrations, posters, and stained glass. Later in life, he converted to Catholicism, which deeply influenced his art, leading to many religious works. Toorop died in The Hague, leaving behind a legacy continued by his daughter, Charley Toorop, and grandson, Edgar Fernhout, both of whom also became artists.
