Tiger and Bamboo drops its hunter headfirst out of the grove, and the whole print seems to tilt under the weight. Utagawa Yoshikazu designed this Japanese woodblock print in 1850, late in the Edo period, when no living tiger walked the islands. Artists of the Utagawa school built their beasts from Chinese painting models and traded pelts. So this one arrives half cat, half rumor.
Look at the eyes. Teal irises ringed in pewter whorls glare up through brows curled like smoke. Pink nose. One fang catching light. Ochre fur, combed in thousands of fine carved lines, breaks into sumi ink stripes that echo the bamboo leaves slicing across its flank.
A turquoise bokashi gradation pools below the outstretched paw, where ivory claws flex over wet grass. In Chinese lore the bamboo bends through storms and shelters the mountain's king. Ukiyo-e collectors read that pairing as ferocity kept safe by patience. A pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshikazu gives the old emblem an Edo street swagger. This vintage Japanese art print keeps one paw forever landing on your wall.
