In Three Figures in Water, a young man in a russet tank suit bends over the Atlantic with head lowered and fingers dipping. Cropped black hair tipped right. Both arms dropping into the tide as if testing a rumor. Ultramarine pools behind his hip. Two companions float at the margins, one a smudge of dark curls, the other a bowed head capped in umber. Pencil underdrawing still ghosts their ears.
Marsden Hartley painted nearby. The Provincetown Players staged Eugene O'Neill in a wharf shack. And this watercolor reads like a summer afternoon caught mid-sentence. Wet-into-wet washes of slate gray and teal bleed across the page like gossip, and blotted edges keep every body porous.
Early American modernism rarely looked this candid. These bathers carry a queer gaze, open and unhurried, far from the Demuth family tobacco shop in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Demuth later turned Precisionist, all factories and grain elevators. But here, softness wins, and the cornflower blue horizon keeps his secrets wet and wild.
