About this Artwork
Aboard a sailing schooner off the Cornish coast, Henry Scott Tuke frames a young sleeping sailor nested in white sailcloth, his dark head tipped toward open sky. Painter of sea-bathers, Falmouth anchorages, and late-Victorian maritime youth — Tuke positions the dormant figure with the architecturally precise geometry of mast, rope, and belaying pin, then dissolves that structure into gestural strokes of slate-grey and pale cerulean.
