Utagawa Hiroshige turns one paper sheet into sixteen windows in Shadow Figures, an Edo period woodblock print where the shลji screen becomes a theater. Each posed wrist glows peach against a block of gamboge yellow or Prussian blue. Beside it, an ash gray silhouette spills across the lattice. A crow lifts off. A rabbit pricks its ears.
This ukiyo-e sheet is an omocha-e toy print, a genre that thrived once the Tenpล reforms of the early 1840s pushed kabuki actors off the carving blocks. Kage-e shadow play was a candlelit parlor game across Edo. Hiroshige, famed for his Tลkaidล road views, signs the sheet as his playful brush. On a vermilion ground, a fist crowned with a celadon-green lid throws a tลjin traveler in a wide hat onto the paper.
Hung as Japanese wall art, this sheet of hand shadow puppets keeps the aged cream of its washi and the soft grain of baren-pressed pigment. Lamplight seems to flicker inside every grid. Stare long enough and your own knuckles begin folding into a fox.
