About the Artwork

Before Edo had a word for pin-up, it had yakusha-e, and this one sold Sawamura Tanosuke III by the sheet. The Utagawa school master Kunisada framed him half-length as Minazuru-hime, a male star of the onnagata art wearing a princess's couture so completely the seam between gender vanishes.

Chrysanthemum fans bloom tangerine behind his shoulder. A camellia sprig floats white in the gloom. And every color here came from a separate carved block pressed onto damp mulberry paper. Slate-navy ground. Butter-yellow petals. A pleated collar of powder blue and cream closes the throat, and a scarlet cord knots at the chest like a held word. Ink-black hair sweeps up into amber hairpin coils.

In the Kiichi Hōgen play, the princess risks everything to steer Yoshitsune toward her father's guarded war manual, so the sideways glance here reads as contraband. Pin this ukiyo-e Japanese woodblock art print above your desk and let a stolen strategy burn coral against the dark.

Origin Story

Toyohara Kunichika, born Ōshima Yasohachi in 1835, was a prominent Japanese woodblock print artist known for his vivid portrayals of kabuki actors and beautiful women (bijinga).

Trained under Utagawa Kunisada, Kunichika mastered the yakusha-e genre, capturing the drama and vibrancy of Edo and Meiji period theater. His prints, characterized by strong reds and purples, defied traditional color palettes and embraced modern influences.

Despite personal struggles with alcohol and a turbulent life, Kunichika’s work remains celebrated for its dynamic use of color, innovative compositions, and ability to blend traditional ukiyo-e with the evolving spirit of the Meiji era.
