Saito no Oniwakamaru plunges you into the cold pool below a Mount Hiei waterfall, where a boy monks cannot tame rides a giant carp toward the silt. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi designed this Meiji era woodblock print in 1872 for his Ikkai Zuihitsu series. Here Japanese folklore turns wet and heavy.
Look at the child. He will grow into Benkei, warrior monk of the Enryaku-ji western precinct, yet today his curls float loose and his toes flex skyward. A short blade sits clamped between his teeth. One arm locks under the carp's jaw in a grip no novice prayer ever taught.
The fish is pure vermilion armor. Each crimson scale overlaps the next like roof tiles after rain, and its gold eye rolls up at you in disbelief. Indigo current lines slice across teal water. Yoshitoshi learned this ukiyo-e musha-e drama from Utagawa Kuniyoshi, then pushed further.
