About the Artwork
In Poem by Sarumaru Dayu, Hokusai suspends two wanderers in the amber hour when mountains exhale their final warmth. Their sugegasa brims catch copper light as momiji foliage ignites overhead—russet flames frozen in woodblock permanence.
This One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse composition unfurls across moss-jade slopes where a cerulean mist band hovers like unfinished verse. The ukiyo-e technique layers baren-pressed pigments into soft atmospheric recession: peach sky dissolving into buff horizon, viridian contours rolling toward the distant tree line.
A farmhouse roof of burnt sienna anchors domesticity amid wilderness, its thatched mass suggesting Edo-era shelter along pilgrimage routes. Baskets latticed with bamboo strips weigh upon the travelers' blue garments as they trace paths older than memory.
In Poem by Sarumaru Dayu, they mourned the stag's cry at autumn dusk; Hokusai answers with silence made visible—seasonal grief pressed into paper, longing printed in mineral and mulberry.
