A Heian prince stops in new snow, and winter holds still for him. In Murasaki and Genji Viewing the Snow, Utagawa Kunisada, signing as Toyokuni III, raises a paper parasol over his hero until its white disk hangs like a second moon. Snow-laden bamboo bends above, leaves flecked teal and ink-black.

Persimmon silk crawls with gold bamboo stalks and pale crests, then sinks at the hem into Prussian blue, the imported pigment Edo period printmakers chased like treasure. A checkered obi grips a gilt-hilted sword. White trousers spill across the ground, a stream caught mid-freeze. Carver Yokogawa Horitake keeps each fold sharp enough to crack.

His kabuki-bright face turns left, toward Lady Murasaki past the paper's edge. A snow-capped lantern pierced with boar's-eye windows stands by a brushwood fence. Beyond, pines dissolve into bokashi gray above a sliver of indigo river. This Japanese woodblock print folds The Tale of Genji into ukiyo-e theater, a Genji-e courtship balanced on black geta, one clog lifted over the cold.

Origin Story

Utagawa Kunisada, also known as Toyokuni III (1786–1865), was a titan of the Japanese ukiyo-e tradition, celebrated as the most commercially successful printmaker of his time.

Born in Edo, Kunisada trained under Toyokuni I, swiftly becoming famed for his vibrant kabuki actor portraits, bijin-ga (images of beautiful women), and sumo wrestlers.

Producing an astonishing 20,000 designs, he dominated Edo’s artistic world through bold compositions and striking colors, shaping public taste with unmatched innovation.

Rediscovered by modern scholarship, Kunisada now enjoys recognition for brilliantly capturing Edo’s lively cultural scene, leaving behind a legacy of visual poetry and dynamic storytelling.
