In Sargent's Mountain Stream, where the rushing spine breaks across the boulder field, Sargent arrests the moment in a flood of blue-gray and raw sienna wash. His brush — loaded, dragged, released — maps the cascade's grammar: opaque white lifted from wet paper for foam, violet-inflected shadow pooling behind submerged stone. The pebble shore — tawny ochre, dove-gray, spotted umber — reads as pure abstraction: a foreground that refuses narrative in favor of sensation alone.
A nude figure sits at the torrent's edge, pale as unprimed linen against the chromatic riot, their presence anchoring the plein-air study in a specifically human quiet.
