A boatman leans on his pole in the shallows of Lake Yamanaka, and the mountain leans back. Hiroaki Takahashi drew Mount Fuji from Lake Yamanaka in the early Showa years, after the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake had turned his earlier blocks to cinders. A Fuji made by a man starting over in his fifties.

Color carries the weight, water-based pigment pressed into mulberry paper with a baren until the sky thins toward an apricot haze. Snow runs down Fuji's cone in chalk-white fingers over slate gray rock. Below, bokashi gradation pulls the water through turquoise into a cobalt deep enough to drown the afternoon.

Publisher Watanabe Shozaburo shipped this shin-hanga stillness to collectors across the Pacific, and you can feel why. A double-trunked tree coils up the right edge in umber bark. Its cream blossom scatters over cerulean sky, confetti that never lands. A peach-pink cloud idles at the horizon of this Japanese woodblock print. The boatman has not moved. He is waiting for the mountain to blink first.

Origin Story

Takahashi Shōtei, born Hiroaki in 1871 in Tokyo, was a prominent figure in the shinsaku-hanga and later shin-hanga movements. Under the tutelage of his uncle, Matsumoto Fuko, Shōtei mastered woodblock artistry, blending tradition with innovation.

Recruited by Watanabe Shōzaburō, Shōtei contributed to the revival of ukiyo-e, creating works that resonated with both Japanese and Western audiences. Despite the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 destroying many of his woodblocks, he rebuilt and continued producing evocative prints.

Shōtei's art, marked by delicate landscapes and atmospheric scenes, remains a testament to his resilience and the enduring beauty of shin-hanga.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
