Tsukioka Yoshitoshi was barely twenty-one in 1860 when he drew this glare for the carvers' cherry wood blocks. Modern Gallants with Morning Glories hands you an Edo street tough caught mid-turn. His chalk-white face clenches around a vermilion pout that seals some insult we never hear. Pale sky blue shades his shaved crown. The black topknot is a knotted fist.
Lift your eye to his shoulder and this ukiyo-e woodblock print becomes skin. Irezumi crawls beneath a slack tenugui towel. A scarlet tengu mask leers from the shoulder blade beside a grinning moon-faced twin. Lower down, a white shishi lion-dog paws a brocade ball through cinnabar flame and pine-needle teal. Utagawa Kuniyoshi taught his pupil this kabuki bravado of ink on flesh, and the pupil makes it swagger.
Prussian blue floods the ground behind him. Ruffled asagao crowd in, the mutant coral and mauve blooms Edo growers bred during a citywide morning glory craze. Each opens at dawn and shuts by noon. Hang this Japanese art print and watch his temper outlast the flowers.
