Lucifer means light-bringer, and Franz von Stuck left him one thin ray. It falls through indigo-violet murk at the picture’s far edge and curls into an ochre arc. The morning star sits with his spine turned to it. Naked on a slab of rock, jaw jammed into curled fingers. Two bone-pale eyes, each pricked with an ember-red pupil, burn out of bitumen black.

Everything else is pose. A forearm props the head, fingertips pressed to the lips. The free hand clamps the rock beside pinions of pewter-teal and oxblood. Dürer gave this slump to Melencolia in 1514. Rodin’s Thinker wore it over the Gates of Hell in the 1880s. Stuck stripped it for Satan, then set pinprick vermilion pupils inside a chalk-white glare. Milton’s proud rebel from Paradise Lost has finished his speeches.

The canvas dates from the year Bismarck fell, six years before the Munich magazine Jugend handed German Art Nouveau its name, Jugendstil. Kandinsky and Klee later studied under this painter. For a gothic interior, the giclée print carries every scuffed thread of that 1890 surface and the oldest sulk in scripture. Night, squared, with two eyes open.

Origin Story

Franz von Stuck (1863–1928) is a German painter, sculptor, printmaker, and architect, best remembered as the self-styled “prince of artists” of Munich’s fin de siècle. He was a co-founder of the Munich Secession and built a mythological theatre out of his canvases, where luminous bodies, pagan gods, and femmes fatales inhabited symbolist stages of vice and ecstasy. His Sin (1893) became an icon of decadent Europe, fusing erotic allure with moral unease. A master of chiaroscuro and gilded ornament, von Stuck blended Symbolism with Jugendstil, exerting influence on a generation that included Kandinsky, Klee, and the young Hitler who idolized him.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
