Eight centuries after the Genpei War, Hokusai hands the pride of the Minamoto samurai to a bird. His 1822 surimono, Little Raven with Minamoto Clan Sword, turns a Heian-period heirloom blade into cargo for a crow. Wings spread in ragged ink. The slate gray beak points straight at the earth. The white-ringed eye stays open for the fall.
Clamped against sumi-black feathers rides Kogarasu-maru, the legendary tachi whose name means little crow. Hokusai lets the sword hoard the color. A lavender silk grip flashes cream diamonds of rayskin. Vermilion bands pulse down the scabbard like heat under lacquer. A teal cord loops loose and restless. Legend says a crow carried this blade from Ise Shrine to an emperor, so the courier turns thief and steals its own name back.
Plum blossoms scatter below in cream petals and verdigris dots, the first flowers of a Japanese spring. Now this Edo-period ukiyo-e woodblock print wraps a tough phone case, its inky blacks cut sharp against rice-paper cream. Every call lands mid-flight and the raven keeps flying with its stolen treasure, plum petals falling in its wake.
