About This Phone Case
Paul Sérusier's Harvest of Buckwheat holds one figure bent low over rust-red stalks, a lone silhouette bound to the rhythm of Breton fieldwork. Painted during Sérusier's Pont-Aven years, the canvas trades naturalistic light for flattened planes of olive and umber, each shape closed by a dark cloisonnist outline in the manner the Nabis prized.
The harvester's pale cap breaks the near-black cloak surrounding her, a single bright mark against a field built from broad, unmodulated color. Before her, wheat stooks stand in conical rows, their golden-brown mass answering the diagonal swaths of cut buckwheat scattered like brushstrokes across the ground.
This is Sérusier working through the synthetist lesson Gauguin gave him at the Bois d'Amour: color composed by feeling, not observed fact. The harvester's bowed posture, caught mid-labor, dissolving into the field's larger pattern until figure and furrow read as one continuous gesture, cut stalk and stooping back folded into the same rust-red motion.
