Night pools in the Kanda River gorge, and Kobayashi Kiyochika lets it linger like summer heat. Fireflies at Ochanomizu, a Meiji-era woodblock print from around 1880, gives nearly all its paper to Prussian blue and lampblack. The banks rise as two ink-soaked walls. Between them floats one small roofed boat, its shoji windows lit the color of warm rice paper.

Look closer. A persimmon-orange lantern hangs inside the cabin beside a seated passenger, and its glow lands on the water in broken amber bars. Two silhouettes stand at the stern with a pole angled into the current. Around them drift sulfur-yellow sparks, the fireflies that city dwellers once rowed out to watch on early summer evenings.

His night views of Tokyo came to be called kosenga, or light-ray pictures. Kiyochika was a former Tokugawa retainer watching gas lamps arrive in his city, and he taught ukiyo-e to see the way a camera does. This Japanese art print keeps the older kind of light. Hang it where your room dims early and let the insects have the last word.

Origin Story

Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847–1915) was a visionary ukiyo-e artist who chronicled Meiji Japan’s dizzying leap into modernity. His woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations captured steam trains, red-brick buildings, and war-torn landscapes through Western-influenced chiaroscuro and kōsen-ga techniques. From Tokyo’s rain-slicked bridges to Russo-Japanese War propaganda, Kiyochika fused Eastern tradition with industrial transformation. Though ukiyo-e waned, he painted Japan’s metamorphosis with subtle satire, somber palettes, and radiant nightscapes. Often hailed as the last master of ukiyo-e or the first modern Japanese printmaker, Kiyochika’s work remains a rare lens on Westernization, modernization, and cultural upheaval during Japan’s defining 19th-century transition.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
