August 1931. A tuxedo cat pours itself low beneath a staked tomato vine, and Takahashi Hiroaki stops the clock one second before the pounce. He dated the design himself: Showa 6, eighth month. Cat with Tomato Plant has been holding that second ever since.

Follow the spine. It climbs in a sumi-black arc, each hair cut into cherry wood by a carver working at whisker width. Straw-gold eyes lock on something past the paper's edge. One hind leg trails behind, forgotten.

Japanese cat art often favors the napper on a cushion. This animal is all appetite. Above the hunter, vermilion tomatoes swell among teal-viridian leaves. The fruit was still a newcomer on Japanese tables, a Western import ripening in Showa-era yards. Two bamboo stakes cross overhead, chopsticks abandoned mid-meal.

Shin-hanga artists loved a quiet garden. Hiroaki, known to collectors as Shotei, gave this one a pulse. Pewter mist rises behind the fur in soft bokashi gradation, and the whole Japanese woodblock print leans forward with its cat. Hang this art print and the room waits for the leap.

Origin Story

Takahashi Shōtei, born Hiroaki in 1871 in Tokyo, was a prominent figure in the shinsaku-hanga and later shin-hanga movements. Under the tutelage of his uncle, Matsumoto Fuko, Shōtei mastered woodblock artistry, blending tradition with innovation.

Recruited by Watanabe Shōzaburō, Shōtei contributed to the revival of ukiyo-e, creating works that resonated with both Japanese and Western audiences. Despite the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 destroying many of his woodblocks, he rebuilt and continued producing evocative prints.

Shōtei's art, marked by delicate landscapes and atmospheric scenes, remains a testament to his resilience and the enduring beauty of shin-hanga.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
