Deer stand like wayward disciples, parrots hang suspended in ornamental cages like arrested brushstrokes, and peacocks' fanlike tails mirror the lavishness of kimono embroidery. Above them all, a twisted oni grins and hovers, brandishing chaos and myth in pink flesh and golden claws.
This Edo-period print by Utagawa Kunisada turns kabuki pageantry into pictorial spectacle, mapping the world of kōgei artisanship onto a surrealist grid of power, reverence, and parody.
