In the emerald lattice of a dreamworld unspooled, Ichida Shōshichirō presides—not as artisan, but sovereign of symbols. His brocaded robe murmurs of Naniwa lineage and courtly elegance, woven with the fire of Japanese woodblock mastery.
Around him: a chimera menagerie. Deer stand like wayward disciples, parrots hang suspended in ornamental cages like arrested brushstrokes, and peacocks' fanlike tails mirror the lavishness of kimono embroidery. Above them all, a twisted oni grins and hovers, brandishing chaos and myth in pink flesh and golden claws.
This Edo-period print by Utagawa Kunisada turns kabuki pageantry into pictorial spectacle, mapping the world of kōgei artisanship onto a surrealist grid of power, reverence, and parody.
