Charles Demuth's Acrobats catches two circus performers mid-hold, vermilion tights blazing against a storm of slate gray. You stand close enough to smell rosin. One man folds forward and hooks an arm across his partner's shoulders. The other crouches under that weight, knee drawn high, head bowed. Their hands lock low. Everything above that grip trembles.
Demuth painted this watercolor and pencil study in 1916, deep in a series born from New York vaudeville houses and Greenwich Village nights. Graphite underdrawing threads every calf. Pigment puckers where he blotted the wash. The grain reads as sawdust on a ring floor, and flesh-toned arms glow pale coral against the saturated tights.
Demuth, a gay artist raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, studied the male physique as weight passed from one man to another. Their torsos pitch into a single arch. Early American modernism rarely looked this tender.
