About this Artwork
In Young Men Bathing Naked in the Tiber, Rome rises in tiers behind the crew of swimmers, pale fortifications and dark cypress pinned along the slope above the city's arterial river.
Sepia ink flattens noon into something cooler and slower. A small sailing craft cuts the silver reach of the river. These are athletes of an unhurried hour, Roman idlers gilded by reflected glare off the water.
Leroux gives the scene to young men at ease in their own skin, one drying his head under white cloth, another seated with a band across his brow. The grouping recalls the long European fascination with the male nude, the bathing subject that carried homoerotic charge through Belle Époque studios and academic Salons.
