A summer on Fehmarn, that small island where Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent three Baltic seasons painting his Brücke companions naked among the dunes. Here, in this hand-tinted woodblock from 1912, three bathers occupy a stretch of glacier-rounded stone, their bodies washed in pale apricot, their contours torn from pearwood with a knife that left no apology.
Pools of teal-green sit flat as enamel, refusing depth. The straw hat with its red band — modesty's small luxury — has been laid aside on a boulder. One nude faces forward, hand cocked at the hip; the seated companion's back curves into the woman bending behind her, hands raised into dark hair. The rosebush at the upper left burns like a stamp of Dresden Expressionist defiance, Lebensreform made visible.
