She faces away from us toward a tall pier mirror, her chemise bunched at her ankles, stockings still rolled to mid-thigh in dusty black. Auburn hair piles loose at her nape. Cadmium reds bleed into oxblood across the curtains; her skin is pearl, primrose, faintly bruised lilac where the brush dragged thin. The pier glass returns her in pinker flesh tones, doubled, anonymous.

Toulouse-Lautrec made over fifty studies of Parisian prostitutes in these years, and this one carries the quiet of routine: no flirtation, no client, only a woman appraising her own reflection in the rue d'Amboise rooms.
