Head first, Itō Jakuchū's White Macaw drops through a disk of sumi black like a spilled cup of milk.

Parrots reached Edo-period Japan as cargo, carried into Nagasaki on Dutch and Chinese ships and sold to collectors hungry for foreign plumage. The Kyoto painter gave his exotic bird a swing fit for a lord's pet. Cinnabar scrollwork coils around each end of the bar, and two turquoise feeding cups sit on lotus-petal stands banded in cobalt and oxblood. Saffron rods drop from above the circle's rim.

Then comes the plumage. Hairline rust-orange strokes scallop the chalk-pale body feather by feather, the same patient counting that made his bird-and-flower painting famous. A honey-ringed eye stares out, upside down and unbothered.

Published as a Japanese woodblock print around 1900, a century after his death, this kachō-ga roundel keeps the old greengrocer's son at his favorite game. Vermilion seals burn in the upper left, and the macaw hangs forever one second before letting go.

Origin Story

Itō Jakuchū (1716–1800) was an Edo period Japanese painter known for his captivating depictions of birds, especially chickens. His work, while rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, demonstrated modern experimentation with perspective and stylistic techniques.

Jakuchū's vivid and realistic approach placed him alongside Maruyama Ōkyo, and he gained recognition as one of Kyoto’s leading artists. Deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism, Jakuchū balanced spiritual elements with a growing awareness of Kyoto's increasingly commercial society.

His art, celebrated for its detail and eccentricities, played a key role in Japan's cultural tapestry, and his legacy continues to shape Japanese art history today.

Framed Art Prints

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

Framed Canvas

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
