The candle has just gone out. And in this Vanitas engraving by an unnamed British 17th Century hand, smoke keeps climbing from the snuffed wick in a knuckled plume, and two bubbles hang in the soot-black air. In a second they'll pop, but the engraver stopped the clock first.

Below them a human skull rests its upper teeth on a sheet of music, lower jaw long gone. Burin lines wrap the dome in curved cross-hatching until bone glows tallow ivory against walnut-brown shadow. A paper scrap beside the shell reads Omnia Vana, borrowed from Ecclesiastes. All is empty.

Above it a many-petaled rose swells at full bloom. A spiral shell tips on its side beneath a heavy curtain, and every surface is built from hairline strokes in bistre and burnt umber. Chiaroscuro, wrung from a single ink.
