About this Artwork
Joseph Christian Leyendecker built US Navy Sailors, a Collier's magazine cover study from 1917, on a field of fine graphite lines.
An officer lifts binoculars to his eyes in the upper right corner and his dark uniform anchors the only figure in the composition dressed for command rather than labor. Setting him apart in gunmetal shading, buttons picked out in gold against the surrounding grisaille ground. Everywhere else on the sheet, bare-chested sailors rehearse motion: an arm braced, a shoulder turned, a knife gripped low. Like a drafting table left mid-calculation. Every sailor within it exists twice, three times, rehearsed and reconsidered.
The officer alone holds still, scanning some threat beyond the paper's edge that the viewer never sees. His raised elbow forms a hard triangle against the soft ochre flesh tones filling the rest of the study. This is Golden Age illustration doing quiet reconnaissance work before the loud cover image existed: Leyendecker testing where authority should sit inside a crowd of enlisted bodies. A faint epaulette sketch drifts near his shoulder, penciled in and never resolved, evidence of a decision still being made.
