Katsushika Hokusai bends Sagami Province around six wading cranes, black-tipped wings folded low over a marsh silvered with bero-ai, the imported Prussian blue that gave his Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji a cold brilliance no local pigment could match.

Two birds lift into a paler sky, necks stretched like calligraphy strokes caught mid-formation. Sand dunes ripple beneath them in fine crosshatched lines, moss-green shrub clumps breaking the pale ground where the tancho crane, an old symbol of long life and marital loyalty, was prized on Edo-period New Year prints and wedding screens.

Mount Fuji rises past a rounded foothill washed in sage and jade, its snow cap left the cream of unprinted paper, a woodblock trick turning empty space into altitude. Cloud bands the color of dried plum drift between peak and marsh, a nod to the plum orchards that gave Umezawa its name.

This nishiki-e print reads less as scenery, more as one continuous line of ink holding wings and mountain together. Hokusai's Umezawa Manor turning a minor Sagami sight into pilgrimage imagery, part of the print culture that carried Mount Fuji's silhouette across Japan and later into the Japonisme that reshaped European art.
