Frederic Remington came home from the Spanish-American War with fever in him and a thinned appetite for pageantry. The next year, in his New Rochelle studio, he posed a model in a volunteer’s field kit and built the picture from umber and bone gray. Nothing stands behind the man except a sand-colored wash.

Paint goes thin where a wall might be, thick where the blanket roll takes the light. Brass winks along the Mills belt. An ochre undertone pushes up through the wool, warming a uniform cut for a cooler continent. His posture holds the long boredom that fills most of any tropical campaign, hip cocked, weight slung onto one leg. Free hand capping the muzzle of a Krag rifle planted butt-down in his own shadow. 

The illustrator of galloping cavalry columns kept this U.S. soldier perfectly still, an oil study made for the engraver and the printed page. Smokeless powder had emptied the air of the old battle picture. What remained was a young enlisted man in laced leggings, standing in the heat of his own cast shadow.
