You stand on Castlehill, where the Royal Mile begins, neck bent back. The haar has come up from the Firth of Forth and taken the top of the spire in this monochrome Edinburgh art print. Sea fog swallows the tallest spire in Scotland's capital and hands you its soot-black shoulders.

Crocketed pinnacles climb the flank of Victoria Hall in single file, each one a burnt thistle. Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone in 1842. James Gillespie Graham drew the plans with Augustus Pugin, the man who dressed the Houses of Parliament.

Visitors call it a Gothic cathedral. The Church of Scotland built it as a General Assembly hall, and the Disruption of 1843 split the Kirk before the doors opened. Today it is The Hub, home of the Edinburgh International Festival.

Locals named their city Auld Reekie for the chimney smoke that tarred every stone. This moody Edinburgh street photography keeps the reek. Pin this Scottish Gothic wall art above a desk of ghost stories and Stevenson paperbacks, and let the Old Town go on smoldering.

Origin Story

The Hub is a Gothic Revival landmark crowning Edinburgh's Royal Mile, where Castlehill, Johnston Terrace and the Lawnmarket meet below Edinburgh Castle. James Gillespie Graham and Augustus Welby Pugin designed it as the Victoria Hall, a meeting hall for the Church of Scotland's General Assembly; Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone in 1842. Its octagonal spire climbs 71.7 metres, the highest point in central Edinburgh, above Decorated Gothic stonework: crockets, pinnacles, gablets, lancet windows.

Inside, a rib-vaulted ceiling presides over carved wood panelling and a pulpit topped with a wooden pinnacle. Later named the Highland Tolbooth St John's Church, with services in Gaelic and English, the building closed, sat virtually unused, then reopened in 1999 after architect Benjamin Tindall's redevelopment. Today it houses the Edinburgh International Festival: ticket office, performance venue, Victorian stair lined with contemporary artworks.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. Vertical

Use the sawtooth hanger at the top middle on the back of the frame and hang it on a single screw or nail.

2. Horizontal

Hang the two sawtooth hangers on two screws or nails at the same heightPut two screws or nails in the wall at the same height, spaced the same distance apart as the two sawtooth hangers, then hang your print on them.

How to Hang your Artwork

1. D-rings (most secure)

Screw a D-ring onto the back of the frame on the left and right, both at the same height. A ruler helps here. Then put two screws in the wall where you want your canvas, level with each other and spaced the same distance apart as the D-rings. A spirit level makes this easier. Finally, hook the D-rings onto the screws.

How to Hang your Artwork

2. Straight onto screws

Keep it simple: put two screws in the wall at the same height and rest the inner lip at the top of the back of the frame on them.
