In Kishi Ganku's Tiger Cleaning Its Paw the wind can wait. The great cat has stopped mid-step with its head tilted nearly sideways, rolling lime-bright eyes skyward, guilty as a house cat caught on the counter.
That kinship is real. No wild tigers roamed Edo period Japan, so painters stitched theirs together from imported tiger pelts and the tabby dozing by the brazier. Apricot fur rises in thousands of hair-fine brushstrokes. Ink-black stripes pour over the arched back like spilled calligraphy.
Bamboo crowds the left edge. Rust-dotted shrubs flicker like embers along the top corners, and a pale stream threads past mossy boulders on the right. Behind the back, malachite moss beads the rocks and a white cascade slips between them.
Across 19th century Japanese art the tiger and bamboo appear together, muscle beside a stalk that bends without snapping. Here the tiger bends too. This Japanese tiger painting drags its striped tail low through the grass, the tip dipped in ink.
