Tsuchiya Koitsu's The Floating Pavilion at Katada in the Snow art print opens on a Lake Biwa night so cold the snow-laden pine seems to lean closer for warmth. Snow clumps on its needles like rice cakes left on a shrine step. Below, the Ukimido of Mangetsu-ji stands on wooden stilts, its hooded roof powdered white, one amber paper lantern burning at the rail.

Published by Watanabe Shozaburo in 1934, this shin-hanga Japanese woodblock print carries Showa-era hands in every pass of the baren. Prussian blue deepens overhead. Toward the horizon it thins into a teal haze, a bokashi gradient wiped across cherry blocks by a printer who knew exactly when to stop. Flakes drift as flecks of pale washi paper.

The monk Genshin founded this hall around 995 to pray for fishermen crossing Shiga Prefecture's great lake. Koitsu, once apprentice to Kobayashi Kiyochika, keeps that vigil lit. Hang this winter night scene of Japanese wall art where evenings run long. The lantern's gold ribbon will keep trembling on black water.

Origin Story

Tsuchiya Kōitsu (1870–1949) was a Japanese woodblock print artist who taught light to speak in the shin-hanga movement. Born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, he arrived in Tokyo at fifteen and spent nineteen years in the house of ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika, refining woodblock printing, lithography and illustration while developing his own kosenga, or light-ray, landscapes. Early triptychs of the First Sino-Japanese War gave way to hanging-scroll painting for the Chinese market after pleurisy ended his lithographic work.

At sixty, a meeting with publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō relit his career. Gion no Yozakura set lanterns glowing across Kyoto's cherry blossoms; Morigasaki Kaigan floated silhouetted figures beneath yellow moonlight. Working chiefly with Doi Sadaichi from his Chigasaki home, Kōitsu joined Kawase Hasui and Hiroshi Yoshida in renewing Japanese printmaking, favouring dusk, rain and indigo nights where every shadow holds its breath.
