About this Artwork
Ubaldo Gandolfi's A Study of a Seated Male Nude seizes an Italian Baroque body mid-coil, a life-room drill in oil paint where anatomical draftsmanship hardens into drama.
The eighteenth-century figure sits still yet nothing about him rests. His right arm braces against the rock, his trunk spirals to the right, and the left heel rises onto vermilion-touched toes as though the next second will bring him upright. Slate-blue cloth pools beneath him and umber woods close in behind, painted thin and fast. That sprung energy grew from Bologna's long lineage of instruction, the Carracci tradition of drawing muscle straight from the living man.
Ubaldo worked beside his brother Gaetano Gandolfi, and both men parlayed studies like this one into altarpiece commissions across Emilia. Alla prima strokes keep the flesh looking wet and quick, laid down before the pose slackened. Every tendon along the calf points down to that lifted heel. The entire painting balances there, upon a few square inches of flushed and rosy skin.
