William Mulready RA (1786–1863) was an Irish genre painter who carried County Clare across the Irish Sea and rooted it in the soil of English rural life. Admitted to the Royal Academy Schools at fourteen, he trained under John Varley and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1804 until the year of his death. His intensely coloured canvases — The Sonnet, First Love, Choosing the Wedding Gown, The Fight Interrupted — chart the tender, tragicomic theatre of ordinary existence with luminous precision. Thirty-three works reside in the Victoria and Albert Museum; five more hold their ground at Tate Britain.

Beyond the easel, Mulready shaped the visual identity of the modern postal age: his 1840 allegorical design for the world's first prepaid letter sheet, the Mulready stationery, launched alongside the Penny Black. Caricatured mercilessly and withdrawn within months, the envelope became its own legend. Elected Royal Academician in 1816 and awarded the Légion d'honneur, he also illustrated Tales from Shakespeare and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield — a painter who gave Victorian sentiment its warmest, most knowing face.
