A half-length figure emerges from Tanner’s charcoal strokes, shoulders squared, torso rising toward light, hair loose across the brow. Subtle shadowing defines pectoral planes, abdominal softness, the suggestion of hip.
What might appear an atelier sketch pulses with cultural force: a Black man, frontally displayed, engaged with centuries of European draftsmanship yet placed firmly within Tanner’s pioneering practice. Every contour marks not only muscle and skin but a challenge to exclusionary systems that denied Black models a place in fine art training.
