Artwork Description
Jean-Désiré-Gustave Courbet builds his Venus from oxblood velvet and tender flesh, her arm rising to part a heavy curtain stained the color of aged wine. This 1865 oil sketch, prepared for his unfinished mythological canvas Venus and Psyche, catches the goddess mid-gesture—knee bent into crushed olive drapery, dark hair falling along her nape, pale torso modeled in cream and warm sienna shadow.
Courbet, leader of French Realism and scandalizer of the Second Empire Salon, paints divinity with a peasant's honesty: muscle, weight, breath. The brush moves quickly, leaving wet edges visible. No Olympus. No idealization.
Around her, the background dissolves into Burgundian reds—Ornans dust, studio shadow, painterly atmosphere. The bed linen lies rumpled. She is a woman first, mythology second, caught lifting the curtain on her own story. Realism made flesh, in Courbet's studio at Rue Hautefeuille, Paris.
