About the Artwork
Cropped from Matisse's 1904 Study for Luxe Calme et Volupte, this image holds the painter's first full engagement with Divisionist color practice. The shore at Saint-Tropez unfurls in tessellated salmon, cerulean interruptions, and lemon-bright intervals arranged according to Signac's optical principles.
Female bathers elongate across the foreground as simplified curves—teal outline against coral sand—while a cobalt pine slices the composition with angular certainty. The Côte d'Azur settles into lavender distance, its water a field of ultramarine stipples softened by haze.
Matisse borrowed his title from Baudelaire's "L'Invitation au Voyage," absorbing the poem's promise of ordered pleasure into paint. Each brushstroke of Study for Luxe Calme et Volupte pulses independently yet collapses into unified radiance when viewed at distance.
