About the Artist

Benjamin Fawcett (1808–1893) was a prominent English wood-engraver and color printer of the 19th century, based in Yorkshire.

Initially working as a printer and bookseller, Fawcett became known for his mastery in wood engraving and his vibrant color prints, which significantly impacted British natural history publications.

Fawcett collaborated closely with writer Francis Orpen Morris, producing illustrated books on ornithology that combined Fawcett's color-engraving techniques with Morris's text.

Fawcett's work, often with engraver Alexander Francis Lydon, brought color to natural history in ways previously unseen, using hand-colored wood engravings and later multi-block techniques to achieve rich, detailed visuals.
