About This Artwork

A glacial stag freezes mid-gait. Hooves crumbling the brittle ash beneath. Trees pitch violently, their trunks splintered into arcs like snapped compass needles. In Storm by Franz Sedlacek, survival isn’t theatrical. It’s anatomical. And this iPhone case doesn’t echo the storm. It archives its retreat.

Your fingers pass over powdered sky, chipped stone, ochre shadows. Expressionist windlines tilt every object off-axis. While the deer—a bleached marionette—drags a broken axis across your screen. While every branch is a spire of damage, every shadow a collapsed intention. Root systems tilt like failed architecture. The horizon is split by storm-strata: pewter, cream, coal.

Sedlacek’s 1932 canvas—painted at the edge of Austria’s psychological collapse—grants this outcrop a paranoid geometry. Embodying high surrealist landscape distortion and the graphic poetics of decay. Phone protection becomes a portable monument: eerie, angular, post-human. For collectors of Austrian magic realism and symbolist motifs, this case becomes wearable melancholy.

Origin Story

Franz Sedlacek painted like a lucid dreamer with a death wish. Born in Breslau and raised in Linz, he studied both architecture and chemistry in Vienna—a duality that shaped his eerie precision. As part of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement, Sedlacek straddled Symbolism and early Magical Realism, conjuring scenes of twilight unease: melancholic women, surreal cityscapes, spectral forests. His most haunting works, like Lied in der Dämmerung (Song in the Twilight), feel like lullabies for the apocalypse.

By day, he worked at the Technical Museum of Vienna; by night, he distilled dread into oil. His figures are suspended between stillness and implosion, often faceless or turned away—as if caught mid-vanishing. In 1939, Sedlacek joined the Wehrmacht. He disappeared near Toruń Fortress, Poland in 1945—his body never recovered. Officially declared dead in 1972, he became his own motif: a ghost folded into war fog.

Sedlacek left behind a portfolio of haunted clarity, where the world’s logic bends—but never breaks—under the quiet weight of its own extinction.
