Artwork Description
She sits inside a hush of forest pigment—black-greens layered wet-on-wet, the brush dragged so the linen weave breathes through. Thayer worked this oil sketch around 1885, after his return from Jean-Léon Gérôme's Paris atelier, when the American Renaissance was casting about for its own Arcadian grammar.
Her bared torso glows with that flesh-toned luminosity Thayer would soon lend his winged allegories; the heavy moss-colored cloth gathered at her waist anticipates the draped seraphim of his later Cornish years. Two yellow arcs flicker beside her shoulder, almost a halo abandoned mid-thought.
Half-finished, wholly arresting, this nineteenth-century figure study lives between studio realism and Symbolist intimation, oil on canvas brushwork holding the stillness of a clearing at dusk.
