About the Artist

Anton Raphael Mengs, a painter of celestial ambition and rigorous discipline, emerged from the crucible of Rococo decadence to carve his mark upon the marble halls of neoclassicism.

Born in 1728, his brush reigned with ruthless precision, seeking the divine within human flesh. Mengs’ portraits shimmer with pagan echoes and imperial longing, his figures poised in the hush of myth’s last breath.

His salons, frequented by exiles and princes, hummed with the bitter gospel of color, a painter’s riot of vision and discipline. Mengs died in 1779, leaving behind canvases that refuse to kneel, even before the sun’s final decree.
