Scops Owl in Moonlight catches Ohara Koson's small raptor one heartbeat before the drop. Wings half open. Talons still locked on a soot-black branch.
Look at the eyes first. Two persimmon-orange discs burn inside a ruff of ink whiskers, and they aim down the page toward a bone-ivory crescent moon. Koson sank that moon beneath the bird, so the hunter leans over its own lantern.
One wing lifts in oyster-pale feathers barred with pewter. The other arches back, flecked moss-olive, and a rust-red patch flares at the shoulder. Glacier-blue claws grip bark that the carver cut rough and the printer inked heavy.
Behind everything, bokashi gradation does the weather. Ash-taupe pigment was brushed across a dampened woodblock by hand until charcoal pooled around the crescent. That soft shading made this shin-hanga nocturne a favorite with Japonisme collectors hunting Japanese woodblock prints abroad.
