About this Artwork
Satan Summoning his Legions, painted by Thomas Lawrence in 1796 and shown at the Royal Academy the following spring, opens on a stare that will not release you. Milton's fallen angel plants both feet on a jagged rock ledge, chest bare, jaw set, eyes fixed on yours. Lawrence was twenty-six, unproven as a history painter, gambling his reputation on Paradise Lost and a single line: 'Awake, arise, or be for ever fallen.'
The picture arrives at the edge of British Romanticism, years before the movement reached its peak. The muscular torso, said to have been modeled on the boxer John Jackson, catches ember glow rising from the dark below, warming the flesh to ochre and leaving the background near black.
A sword hangs from a baldric slung low across the hip. Behind him, a second exile turns half away, spear in hand, waiting on the command. The eye that meets yours belongs to a rebel angel caught mid-summons, ember glow still rising at his heel.
